Death of wild elephants in Assam: In a tragic incident, 18 wild elephants died in a lightning strike in Nagaon district of central Assam (Assam). Officials said this on Thursday. Confirming the incident, Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Kabita Padmanabhan said a team including officials from the Wildlife, Forest and Veterinary Department went to the forest area on Thursday to find out the exact cause of death. Forest and wildlife officials said the incident took place on Wednesday night in the proposed reserve forest (PRF) in the hilly Kandali. Assam’s chief wildlife warden M.K. Yadav was quoted by local wildlife officials as saying that 16 elephants had died and the chances of lightning were high. Locals told forest officials that dead carcasses were scattered in the deep forest area. After receiving the information, a team of forest officials reached the spot and the elephant carcass was sent for postmortem.
